Homemade Uncrustables Recipe: Make Soft, Sealed Jam Sandwiches

If your children love Uncrustables, you can save a lot by making them at home with this DIY Uncrustables recipe. I remember when store-bought Uncrustables first appeared and how much my kids wanted to try them. Back then I spent more than I should on convenience foods. Now I make our own at home for lunches and snacks to cut grocery costs.

I ordered a sandwich sealer tool online, often called a sandwich cutter and sealer. It’s inexpensive and makes the job faster and neater, though you can often find similar tools at local stores if you prefer to shop in person.

Bread (slices large enough to trim)
Peanut butter

Sandwich bags for freezing

Directions

  • Choose sandwich bread that is large enough so the cutter can remove the crust without trimming the filling area.
  • For each sandwich, use two slices of bread.
  • Spread peanut butter on the center of each slice, staying away from the edges where the cutter will seal.
  • Spread jelly on the center of one slice, on top of the peanut butter if desired.
  • Place the slice with only peanut butter on top of the peanut-butter-and-jelly slice, peanut-butter-side down.
  • Position the cutter on the sandwich and press down firmly until the crust is fully cut away.
  • While the cutter is still in place, remove the crust pieces.
  • Press the sealer portion firmly in the center to seal the sandwich edges.
  • Lift off the cutter, place the sealed sandwich in a sandwich bag, and put it in the freezer.

To pack for school, move the sandwiches directly from the freezer into lunchboxes; they’ll thaw during the day and stay fresh. If you want to eat one right away, microwave it for about 15–25 seconds (times vary by microwave) until slightly softened.
