June is National Dairy Month, and I’m excited to partner with the American Dairy Association to share tasty, dairy-forward treats that help you reach your recommended servings.

Summer is in full swing at our house — it’s hard to believe it’s already June. We just returned from our big family vacation the week after school ended. With a busy summer calendar, that week was the perfect time to get away.
Now we’re back and settling into our summer routine. My husband and I want to make sure our kids spend their days doing fun, active things rather than sitting in front of screens, and that they keep eating well while they’re home. Over the next couple of months there will be plenty of screen-free activities — today they pulled out the sprinkler for extra fun on the trampoline.
This summer my job is to help them make good food choices. I plan to encourage snacks and meals focused on fruits, vegetables, yogurt, and milk instead of the cookies and cakes that inevitably appear when I bake. Many people don’t meet the recommended servings of dairy each day — experts suggest three servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy daily. For most families, that means adding at least one more serving of dairy each day.
Milkshakes are one of our favorite summer treats because they’re easy to customize. Our kids always want a cool treat on a hot day — honestly, they enjoy these any time of year — so I try to make them a little healthier when I can.
For this version I used frozen yogurt blended with coffee and chocolate milk to recreate a coffee-house style frappe. It’s a great way to add extra protein and dairy to each serving, and my kids had no idea they were drinking something nutritious. This is one treat I’m happy to make again and again.
Okay, I’ll stop with the milk puns — but I couldn’t resist a few along the way.
