I don’t want anyone to think I’m a clean freak simply because I’m sharing a method to clean the microwave without chemicals — far from it. I do, occasionally, get into cleaning moods (call it intermittent OCD) when every surface in the house suddenly looks appallingly dirty and I have the urge to clean everything. Those moments aren’t my normal routine, though. Most of the time I stack dishes in the sink and wait in vain for a cleaning fairy to appear. That never happens, so I’m sharing some simple techniques I’ve learned — including how to clean the microwave without harsh chemicals.
Generally I try to avoid chemical cleaners. I’ve had moments of worrying about all kinds of household products and what they might do to our health. At the same time, I dislike spending a lot of time cleaning and prefer fast, effective solutions. That tension is exactly why I’m posting this method. It’s so simple I almost hesitated to include it, but I know some people still reach for toxic sprays and still can’t get the microwave clean. Maybe you already know this trick and someone just forgot to tell me.

For years I struggled with how to clean the microwave. I don’t use mine much — it’s mostly an extra shelf safe from dogs and a place to defrost meat I forgot to thaw. Still, someone at our house uses the microwave often and it would get very dirty. I remember standing with a bottle of toxic cleaner in my twenties, scrubbing and scrubbing while stubborn crud refused to come off. It felt like glue.
About twelve years ago, my then-boyfriend introduced me to a disposable cleaning packet with a lemon-soaked towel that you microwaved for a few minutes and then wiped the interior. It worked — but anything cooked afterward tasted faintly of lemon cleaner for days, which I found unpleasant. Then, by happy accident, I discovered an even simpler method.
I left a bowl of water in the microwave to heat for a recipe. I got distracted and after the water had boiled I waited a few extra minutes before opening the door. When I finally opened it, the microwave was steaming and very damp — water was even dripping from under the door. As I wiped up the moisture, I noticed the gunk inside came away effortlessly, even from corners and edges that had seemed impossible to clean. It was a revelation.
Below are the steps I use to clean the microwave without chemicals. It’s quick, effective, and leaves no lingering fumes.
HOW TO CLEAN THE MICROWAVE WITHOUT CHEMICALS
- Place a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave and fill it with about 3 cups of tap water.
- Heat the bowl on HIGH for 10 minutes, allowing the water to come to a vigorous boil that creates plenty of steam.
- Lay an old kitchen towel under the edge of the microwave door to catch any stray drips.
- When the timer finishes, do not open the door immediately. Leave the bowl inside with the door closed for 5 minutes so the steam continues to loosen grime.
- After 5 minutes, open the door carefully to avoid steam burns. Remove the hot bowl and set it somewhere safe where children, pets, and you won’t knock it over.
- Take out the turntable, ring, or other removable parts and wipe them down with a damp cloth.
- Wipe the inside of the microwave with a damp washcloth, rinsing the cloth as needed. Most of the stuck-on residue should come away easily.
- If some stubborn spots remain, repeat the process with enough water in the bowl until the microwave is clean.
- Optional: add a few drops of lemon juice to the water while heating if you prefer a mild fresh scent, though it isn’t necessary for cleaning.
I hope this helps you get your microwave sparkling without toxic cleaners. Have you ever discovered a useful cleaning trick by accident? I’d love to hear about it — and if you try this method, let me know how it worked for you. I read and try to respond to comments when I can. Thanks for stopping by!
