Dark ‘n’ Stormy Cocktail Recipe: Classic Rum & Ginger Beer Guide

When storm clouds gather and I want to get cozy without feeling weighed down, I reach for a cocktail that’s both warming and bright. The Dark and Stormy fits the bill — spicy ginger beer, deep dark rum and a splash of lime make a drink that’s refreshing, simple and satisfying.

The Dark and Stormy traces its roots to Bermuda in the 19th century, but I first discovered it thanks to friends who would arrive with everything needed: ginger beer, dark rum and limes. There’s a special pleasure in having a complete cocktail kit handed to you — no missing ingredients, no last-minute substitutions.

This cocktail needs only three ingredients plus ice. Because the recipe is so simple, the quality of each component matters: fresh lime juice, a bold dark rum and a lively ginger beer. The trick is the ratio — enough ginger beer to stay light and effervescent, just the right amount of rum for warmth, and a squeeze of lime to brighten the flavors. When balanced, the result is impossible to resist and will likely prompt requests for another round.
