Make an effective foaming hand soap at home for pennies. This simple, natural recipe uses organic ingredients and delivers great lather, pleasant scent, and gentle cleansing — all for under 50 cents a bottle.

How to make foaming hand soap for under 50 cents a bottle
My discovery started at my sister’s house, where she had peppermint foaming soap in the bathroom. I washed my hands before holding her new baby and was surprised by how well the soap lathered and smelled.
When I learned she made it herself I was shocked — it felt luxurious, smelled amazing, and worked perfectly. Homemade foaming hand soap changed the way I buy soap.
How to save $3.39 this week
With four children, our household goes through a lot of hand soap — especially during potty training. Before I started making my own, I paid about $3.89 for a bottle that was mostly water. It felt like a rip-off.
After calculating costs, I discovered that this DIY foaming hand soap costs under 50 cents per bottle. It requires just three main ingredients plus water, and it performs beautifully.

The simple ingredients you need
1. Castile soap: A gentle, plant-based liquid soap works best. Dr. Bronner’s is a popular choice, but any high-quality castile soap will do.
2. Liquid oil: Use an oil that remains liquid at room temperature, such as jojoba, olive, avocado, or grapeseed oil. Oil adds moisture and helps cut through grease. Avoid solid coconut oil unless it’s fractionated.
3. Essential oils: These provide scent and subtle antimicrobial support. Choose scents you enjoy — peppermint, lemon, lavender, or blends like Thieves work well.

DIY Foaming Hand Soap Recipe
What you need
- Foaming soap bottle: Use a foaming pump bottle (reuse one from a purchased product or buy a reusable foaming dispenser).
- 1 ½ cups water (distilled or boiled and cooled is best)
- 2 tablespoons castile soap
- ½ teaspoon liquid oil (jojoba, olive, avocado, or grapeseed)
- 10 drops essential oil of your choice
Directions
- Pour the water into the foaming soap bottle first — adding soap to an empty bottle can cause excessive bubbling.
- Add the castile soap and the essential oils.
- Secure the lid and gently shake to combine. Pump a test to ensure the mixture foams; if it’s too thin, add a little more castile soap in small increments.
My favorite essential oil blends
- 6 drops peppermint + 4 drops vanilla
- 8 drops lemon + 2 drops lavender
- 6 drops orange + 4 drops vanilla
- 10 drops Thieves blend
Now I don’t have to visit my sister to enjoy a soap I love. I make it at home for about 50 cents per bottle, and you can too.
