Orange Crush Cocktail Recipe: Fresh Vodka, Orange & Sparkling Mix

I first tasted an Orange Crush cocktail on a coastal road trip to Ocean City, Maryland with a stop in Delaware, and it was love at first sip. Bright, fizzy, and bursting with citrus, the balanced vodka makes it taste like summer in a glass.

What makes this cocktail truly refreshing is fresh-squeezed orange juice — avoid bottled juices if you can. Fresh oranges give a lively aroma and natural sweetness that bottled OJ just can’t match.

Since that first sip, I’ve recreated this classic beach drink at home using fresh Florida oranges, a splash of Cointreau (or another orange liqueur), mandarin- or orange-flavored vodka, and an orange soda topper instead of lemon-lime soda. The result is vibrant, fizzy, and perfectly drinkable.

It’s incredibly simple — just four main ingredients, lots of crushed ice, and minimal fuss. Give it a try; it’s a crowd-pleaser and ideal for sunny afternoons.

How This Crush Is Different!

  1. I use an orange soda like Poppi instead of Sprite for a brighter, fruitier finish.
  2. A mix that includes blood orange or Cara Cara adds a beautiful, natural color and depth of flavor.
  3. Lots of crushed ice — this is the key to getting that chilled, beach-bar texture and keeping the drink cold longer.

How to Make a Perfect Orange Crush

  1. Start with plenty of crushed ice. Crushed ice chills faster and gives the drink that classic slushy texture.
  2. Choose sweet, juicy oranges. Naval, Valencia, or Cara Cara are excellent choices; the sweeter the fruit, the less additional sweetener you’ll need.
  3. Use mandarin- or orange-flavored vodka for an extra citrus punch, or regular vodka if you prefer.
  4. Add an orange liqueur such as Cointreau, triple sec, or Grand Marnier to introduce complexity and a touch of sweetness.
  5. Top with sparkling water or an orange soda to keep the cocktail light, effervescent, and refreshing.

Notes

Fresh OJ > bottled – Fresh-squeezed juice makes a noticeable difference. Use sweet varieties like Naval, Valencia, or Cara Cara for the best flavor.

Crushed ice = key – Crushed ice keeps the drink colder longer and gives that authentic beach-bar texture.

Cointreau swap – If you don’t have Cointreau, triple sec or Grand Marnier are good substitutes (Grand Marnier will be a bit richer).

Make it fizzy last – Add the soda or sparkling water at the end to preserve the bubbles.

Batch for parties – Multiply the ingredients by 4–6 and serve from a pitcher; keep the ice separate until serving.
