Valentine’s Day is almost here, and this Valentine’s Puppy Chow is one of my go-to no-bake treats. I make it every year because it’s fast, simple, and always a hit — sweet, crunchy, and perfect to toss together while dinner’s cooking or before movie night.

If you’re building a Valentine’s dessert spread, this puppy chow pairs wonderfully with Valentine sugar cookies, pretzel rods, or chocolate-covered strawberries. For a savory snack option, try a smoked Chex mix.

This is the familiar puppy chow (also called Muddy Buddies) dressed up for Valentine’s Day with colorful candies.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Rice Chex: One box (about 9–10 cups). Gluten-free Rice Chex works well.
- Chocolate chips: Semi-sweet is my preference, but milk, dark, or white work too.
- Peanut butter: Smooth gives the creamiest coating; crunchy is fine if you like texture.
- Pretzels: Mini pretzels or sticks for a salty crunch.
- Valentine M&M’s and white chocolate chips: For festive color. Mini marshmallows, nuts, or sprinkles can be used as alternatives.
- Butter and vanilla extract: To enrich the chocolate mixture.
- Powdered sugar: For the signature puppy chow coating.

How to Make Valentine’s Puppy Chow
For exact measurements and the printable recipe, see the recipe card below.

Step 1
Prepare the base. Combine the Rice Chex cereal and pretzels in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Step 2
Melt the chocolate. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth. Stir in vanilla. Alternatively, melt over low heat on the stove.

Step 3
Coat the mix. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and pretzels. Fold gently until everything is evenly coated, taking care not to crush the cereal.

Step 4
Add the powdered sugar. Place powdered sugar in a large zip-top bag. Add half the chocolate-coated cereal with half the M&M’s and white chocolate chips, seal, and shake to coat. Repeat with the remaining mixture and sugar.

Step 5
Cool. Spread the coated cereal on a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper. Let it cool completely before transferring to storage containers.
Helpful Tips from My Kitchen
- Use a large bowl: Gives room to toss without breaking the cereal.
- Work quickly: The chocolate sets fast once mixed with the cereal.
- Chill briefly: A short rest in the refrigerator or freezer helps the coating firm up and keeps the mix crisp.
- Great for gifting: Package in small bags or jars for party favors.
